Take Your Social Media Copy to the Next Level with These 7 Tips

These days, having a strong and consistent social media presence has become an integral part of modern public relations and marketing strategies for many businesses. But being simply active on social media and being impactful are two different things that yield different results for your brand’s bottom line.

To make your social media content break through the noise and engage your audience, it needs to be crafted accordingly. So, without further ado, let’s move on to the seven tips that will help you improve the quality of your social media content:

1.    Address the reader directly
When drafting your social media copy, rather than focusing on yourself, grab the readers’ attention by addressing them directly. Using “you” in your social media posts helps establish a stronger personal connection with the reader and adds immediacy to your post.

2.    Use active voice
Drafting your copy in an active voice will help you focus on actions and make it more engaging. For instance, rather than saying: “We were recognized with the award,” say “We won the award.” Note how the second version gets straight to business and puts the emphasis on what your company has achieved.

3.    Offer value
Before clicking “send” on your social media post, ask yourself: how is it useful/interesting to your readers? Why would they care/want to read more about it? Try to address some of these questions in your copy. For example, instead of saying: “Check out our new awesome app here,” you could expand on how the reader can benefit from it by saying: “Be the first to get our latest updates by downloading our new app here.”

4.    Speak in a consistent voice
Character consistency is important for a brand’s public image. Even if your blog and social media accounts are managed by different people, they should be written in a consistent tone that corresponds to your values and brand identity. Using varying tones creates confusion and distrust within your audience, which makes it less likely to buy your products or services.

5.    Feel free to use emojis
Like it or not, emojis have now become a widely accepted form of communication. According to Socialbakers, 60 percent of the 500 most followed brands online use emojis in their tweets and about 40 percent use them on Facebook. So, feel free to take advantage of this growing culture and add a little bit of character to your social media copy.

6.    Ask questions
Asking questions is a great way to make your social media posts more engaging. This approach works even better when you combine your question with a powerful statistic or a call to action. For example, rather than posting: “Help us save the rainforest by participating in our donation program,” you could ask: “Did you know that 50% of the world’s rainforest have disappeared? Help us save what's left by participating in our special donation program here.”

7.    Keep it simple and concise
Despite all the considerations and fine-tuning that go into crafting effective social media copy, the end result needs to remain simple, concise and easy to understand at first glance. People often scroll through their social media feeds, so short punchy posts usually work better than more long-winded ones.
